Biography

Clayton D. Simmons served as Chief Judge of Florida’s Eighteenth Judicial Circuit from 2007-2009. He dedicated seven-and-a-half years of service to the judicial bench, and was selected as Judge of the Year in 2007. Prior to his judicial tenure, Simmons practiced as a civil trial lawyer for more than 22 years with Stenstrom, McIntosh, Colbert, Whigham & Simmons in Seminole County, Florida. In that capacity, he represented corporations and individuals in general civil litigation and complex domestic/family law matters. In addition to his civil litigation practice, Simmons has also been active as a local government attorney. He has served as City Attorney for the city of Lake Mary, College Attorney for Seminole State College, Assistant School Board Attorney for the School Board of Seminole County, assistant legal counsel for the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, and General Counsel for the Sanford Housing Authority. As part of his government practice, Simmons has represented over a dozen governmental entities in administrative actions, contract cases, construction matters, defense of personal injury claims, bid defenses and litigation of zoning and property related matters. Simmons served our country for 6 ½ years as an Officer in the U.S. Air Force, including a year in Vietnam. After leaving active duty he served 22 years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He graduated from Florida State University in 1966 with a degree in Biology, and from Ball State University in 1971 with a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology. Simmons earned his law degree from Nova Southeastern School of Law in 1980.
